Parris Lawn Care Home's Dementia Coffee Mornings
One of the most enjoyable aspects of life at Caring Homes is the relationships we build with our local communities – with friends and neighbours, businesses, and stakeholders like GPs, nurses and physiotherapists.
Welcoming visitors into our homes has a positive impact on our residents, and whether it’s local dog walkers popping in for a coffee, a visit from a local Blue Light team, or a planned activity like hand massages, Tai Chi or seed planting, an opportunity to socialise can be hugely beneficial.
We also feel that we can give something back to the community when it comes to raising awareness around dementia and this is especially important on a local level where the relationships we have built are key to sharing knowledge and offering support.
One way of encouraging engagement on the subject of dementia is bringing people together in a relaxed setting to start the conversation informally. Parris Lawn Care Home hosts a weekly ‘Dementia Coffee Morning’, which is designed simply to bring the local community closer together.
The Opportunity to Chat and Connect
Parris Lawn’s ‘Dementia Coffee Mornings’ offer guests the chance to relax and socialise in the home’s lovely lounges – or in the gardens on a sunny day – whilst also offering the chance to speak with professionals in an informal environment, whether they’re looking for information, support or just someone to chat to.
These events are a lot of fun and are, of course, geared around the residents of Parris Lawn who enjoy the social interaction – but they also provide an opportunity for anyone to speak or ask questions about dementia.
Sharing Expertise and Common Goals
Recently, the Parris Lawn team welcomed some special guests to the coffee morning. Julie and Geraldine from Foundry Healthcare Lewes, and Alison and Kat from Home Instead Lewes District and Uckfield, came along and all interacted very positively with residents.
Foundry Healthcare operate four GP surgeries in Ringmer and Lewes, and one of their GPs attends Parris Lawn every week, so there’s already a strong connection with residents. David, a resident who’s lived in Ringmer all his life said, “Having Foundry so close is a godsend. They have been part of my life for so many years and without them, times would have been tough”.
Home Instead are Parris Lawn’s local Domiciliary Care Team, and having joined forces over the past year, their shared goal is helping local communities to better understand dementia and those who are living with dementia. After the coffee morning, Alison from Home Instead commented, “It was a pleasure to be there and converse with such lovely residents and team members”.
Everyone’s Welcome on Friday Mornings
With a strong network around them and a fantastic team looking after the residents at every level, there’s a real community spirit at Parris Lawn, and no better place to pop in for some company, information or guidance. If you fancy a chat over a brew, then this is the place to be on Friday mornings at 11.30!
All are welcome so please feel free to call the home on 01273 086388 and let them know you will be attending.
