100th Birthday Celebrations at Benson House
The residents and team at Benson House Care Home celebrated a very special birthday last week, Alan a resident at the home celebrated his 100th birthday.
Alan, who was born and spent his childhood in Newcastle has a fabulous sense of humour and when asked what he thought of turning 100 said “I am certain you have the dates wrong”. He is very close to his family, including his son Nigel and wife Jane who live locally to the home.
Alan spent his school years in Oxford at St Edwards School, Banbury Road and he loved his days there and he then went on to serve as a Royal Engineer. On leaving the Army he then started work as a Civil Engineer and loves to talk about his work and the many bridges he has designed around the UK.
Travel has played a massive part in his life, visiting many different places with his favourite destinations being Japan and Egypt.
To celebrate the big day the home had an outdoor party with a barbeque for all to enjoy and Harry a local entertainer recommended by one of our sister homes joined them at the party for a sing along. Head Chef Simon made Alan’s favourite cake, a beautiful fruit cake decorated with fresh flowers, with everyone singing happy birthday. He received a number of presents and cards including a special card form the Queen.
Home Manager Marilyn Kimayong said, “Alan is an amazing resident with a great sense of humour, he is a true gentleman and is very popular with the other residents and the team. Alan is caring and loves his family and friends, it was lovely for us all to be part of his very special day.”
