A Summer Boost Brings Fresh Blooms To Hillside

9th May 2024

As summer shows its face, residents at Hillside Care Home regularly sit out on the patio to enjoy the sunshine so when a surprise gift gave the outside space a lift, it brought smiles all round.

A Surprise Gift and a Trip to the Garden Centre

Everybody at Hillside enjoys a sunny day, and earlier this month the home’s dedicated Maintenance Officer, Aaron, told residents about a surprise he’d been planning. There was a buzz of anticipation! Aaron explained that he’d arranged for B&Q to donate some lovely flowers to plant around the home’s decking and patio areas – an exciting prospect and a great opportunity for an outing.

Resident Eileen was especially keen to see the new flowers and volunteered to join Aaron and the team at the garden centre. Eileen loved the sight of row after row of vibrant blooms stretching out in front of her - a kaleidoscope of colours and fragrances which she got a great deal of pleasure from. She told us that the trip brought back fond memories of when she and her husband, both keen gardeners, used to do their garden together. Afterwards, Eileen’s brother said it was so nice to hear that Eileen had had a trip out and was happy to see pictures of his sister having a lovely time on Hillside’s Facebook page.

The donation of plants was beyond all expectations - it filled the minibus to the brim!

Plants Galore – a Busy Day in the Sunshine for the Garden Club!

The sun shone brightly the very next day, giving Hillside’s Garden Club the perfect opportunity to spring into action. First they deadheaded, then they re-potted the new arrivals, and there was a lot of laughter among the flowerbeds! Evelyn and Nick had a wonderful time potting up the plants on the patio and Evelyn said, “It’s lovely to be outside having some fresh air”.

We know that getting outside does wonders for our mental health and exposing ourselves to sunshine, boosting vitamin D levels in particular, has a huge benefit for our minds. Fresh air and vibrant colours can make gardening truly enjoyable and with warmer days ahead, the prospect of beautiful blooms and sweet scents will entice many of Hillside’s residents out to enjoy the bright side of summer.
