An Event-Filled November At Guysfield Care Home
The residents and Wellbeing team at Guysfield Care Home in Letchworth, Hertfordshire, are always keen to mark an occasion with an activity or celebration and November has given them plenty of opportunity to do just that.
Remember, Remember the Fifth of November ….
Guy Fawkes Night on 5th November started the month off with a bang! Residents got together to make decorations for the day, which involved lots of colouring in and creating pieces of art using brightly coloured autumn leaves. The Wellbeing team took the production of a ‘Guy’ very seriously, designing and making a full-sized Guy Fawkes from recycled materials.
Guy Fawkes Day itself was celebrated with scrumptious treats created with crisp November weather in mind – tasty bangers served with onions in a bun followed by a Bonfire Night favourite, Toffee Apple crumble.
Residents enjoyed a short documentary programme about Guy Fawkes and the infamous plot, sipping hot chocolate topped with marshmallows during the film. Later that evening, residents gathered to admire the spectacular shapes and dazzling colours of a firework display shown on television, and party poppers were let off in celebration of the day.
A Tribute Paid with the Nation on Remembrance Sunday
Remembrance Day followed hot on the heels of Bonfire Night but residents had started creating poppies weeks earlier, so that all Guysfield’s residents and team members could wear one with pride. Resident May B. really found her niche creating the poppies. She told the team how relaxing and therapeutic she found the process and that she felt she had discovered a new hobby.
The home was decorated with thousands of poppies and some flags. Wreaths were also made and one of them was laid on behalf of all residents by John W, who attended the Remembrance Sunday service in the local village of Sandon.
On the 11th, residents watched the live televised broadcast from the Cenotaph in London – a sombre occasion which evoked lots of memories and shared experiences for the residents who all agreed that war like this should never happen again.
Hip, Hip, Hooray, Your Majesty!
King Charles has many fans at Guysfield so his birthday was a lovely opportunity to celebrate. Crowns were made for residents to wear on the day, the home was decorated with flags, as well as beautiful flower arrangements for the tables which residents had helped put together. The Wellbeing team also created an information board with lots of interesting facts about Charles III.
There was more to learn about the king from books and TV programmes, including what food he likes, and lunch was inspired by one of his favourite dishes - Wild Mushroom risotto.
After lunch, everyone sang happy birthday to His Majesty then shared a delicious birthday cake. A fitting way to mark the day which everyone agreed, would have been given the royal seal of approval!
