Brooklyn House have a Bonza day
2nd February 2017
Residents at Brooklyn House Nursing Home in Attleborough spent the day celebrating a taste of the land “Down Under” on 26th January. Australia Day is the anniversary of the arrival of the First Fleet of 11 convict ships commanded by Captain Arthur Phillip in 1788 when he famously raised the Union Jack in Sydney Cove.Today the celebrations have somewhat changed and are now about the diverse communities, national history and of course parties which would not be complete without a barbeque! The morning kicked off with Aboriginal Art, which is one of the oldest art forms currently practiced, having survived over thousands of years. Residents got a chance to finger paint the dots decorating boomerangs. There is always a continuous use of dotting, patterns, lines or hatching to create a sense of movement within the work. Aboriginal artists created their work based on the land, using their subject matter mainly as patterns and animals. These patterns and symbols were created using only the colours found in nature, (for example soil, was depicted in tints of reds, yellows and browns ochres).Inevitably, talk of the Aboriginal Art lead to reminiscence about Australian TV series, with Prisoner Cell Block, Skippy and Neighbours being top of the memories with clips on You Tube being shown in the lounge. Bonza Mate! Then it was onto a session of Oomph and finally in the afternoon residents got the opportunity to taste kangaroo and ostrich. Resident Vicky said "The ostrich was delicious!" and Activities Coordinator Catrina remarked, “We had a fun day and the kangaroo meat certainly put a bounce in everyone”.Brooklyn House provides specialist nursing care in a purpose built environment for up to 38 elderly people. If you would like to find out more about life at Brooklyn House and the care we offer, or to request a meeting with our Home Manager, please contact us on 0808 223 5412 or [email protected].
