Brooklyn House Celebrates Dementia Action Week With A Flurry of Activity!
The Brooklyn House Wellbeing Team are always looking for ways to introduce activities and create opportunities for their residents can socialise – and Dementia Action Week was a great incentive to do just that!
Coffee Morning Raises Funds to Kick Start the Week
Daily events were planned and Monday’s coffee morning in aid of Dementia UK kicked the week off in fine style. The team made cakes at home and brought them in, and the chefs showed off their baking skills with some beautiful scones. £41 was raised for the charity during a lovely sociable morning where relatives and friends came in for a good old natter with residents. In the afternoon, everyone took to the sunny courtyard to plant sunflower seeds for the Caring Homes Sunflower competition. Fingers crossed for some tall ones!
A Canine Character and Musical Memories
On Tuesday, one of Brooklyn’s favourite guests popped in - Wellbeing Co-ordinator Catrina’s dog, Elsa. The residents always look forward to Elsa’s visits – she’s a character, and incredibly strokable - and she brings comfort, as well as initiating lot of reminiscing about pets. In the afternoon, tea was served and there was another opportunity for memories to be shared when the record player was set up. Residents loved browsing through the collection of vinyl and enjoyed the feel of the record sleeves and the distinctive crackle as music played.
More music on Wednesday with guest, Hank, whose ‘Singalong’ is a lovely way of travelling back in time. Music is always well received at Brooklyn House and it’s an activity that can be enjoyed by everyone. Residents joined in with all their favourite songs and as well as singing, there was a lot of laughter as residents (and team members!) got into the spirit of the session, inspired by Hank’s enthusiasm.
Swing-Style Singalong and a Treat from the Chippy
Thursday was action packed! First, a vintage singalong, with Wellbeing girls Agnes and Catrina dressing in various fashions from decades past. "My aunt used to wear polka dot dresses in the 40's" exclaimed resident Cyril. It brought back nice memories all round. In the evening, the team hosted ‘Quiz and Chips’. Two huge boxes of proper fish & chips were brought round from the local chippy, and everyone got stuck into a delicious feast before taking part in the quiz. After three rounds, the winners were reigning champions, Ray’s Angels.
Friday saw the events finally come to a close and game of bingo on the terrace in the sunshine rounded off a wonderful few days. The week had to end somewhere, and it did - with a full house!
