Brooklyn Residents Follow The Sun For A Day On The Beach
Ready to Hit the Road
Tomasz is the Home’s SMO – Senior Maintenance Officer – but he’s always keen to support the team on outings for Brooklyn’s residents. A trip to the seaside was the unanimous choice for maximum sunshine and fresh air so on the chosen day, Tomasz picked up a minibus, ready for the planned trip. Residents – two named Ann, plus Roger - were joined by team members Catrina, Agnes and Skye, who packed the minibus with sunhats, sunscreen and plenty of fluids for the warm day ahead.
The chosen destination was Gorleston-on-Sea, just south of Great Yarmouth. It used to be one of the busiest herring ports along the English coast but developed into a popular seaside resort town when the herring fishery declined in the 19th century. Gorleston became a fashionable destination for early tourists during late Victorian and Edwardian times, so perfect for our day-tripping residents!
Driving Through the Broads to the Beach
Tomasz drove the residents through the beautiful Norfolk Broads area which made for a very pleasant journey, with views of the lovely countryside and horses, cows and birds galore in the fields along the way. In less than an hour, the group arrived at Gorleston and secured a parking spot. It was a busy day at the popular resort!
The huge bay at Gorleston frames a spectacular wide and sandy beach stretching far into the distance, with cliff gardens and a grand promenade above. It’s easy to see why Gorleston is often listed among the best beaches in the UK and with its traditional gardens, model boat pond, pier and fabulous Pavilion Theatre, the town has an authentic ‘seaside’ feel which Brooklyn residents love.
“Oh, I Do Like to Stroll Along the Prom, Prom, Prom …. “
The outing began with a walk along the promenade to soak up the atmosphere. Ann and Roger delighted in seeing the children laughing and playing on the sand and dogs having a run around, barking excitedly. "It's so lovely to see everyone enjoying the sunny day," exclaimed Ann.
Before long, Roger and the ladies had made three new furry friends when a local man stopped to chat after taking his dogs for a frolic on the beach. The group continued walking, taking in the fresh air, with senses heightened by the scents and sounds of the sea. Gulls were gracefully gliding, the sea was calm with gentle waves bobbing, and everyone felt relaxed and happy.
Soon, there was another glorious smell - fish and chips! With the sea air making everybody hungry, it was time to tuck in, with the ocean ahead providing the perfect backdrop for a proper fish and chip lunch.
“It's been a wonderful day," Ann told the team on the way home, "I will sleep well tonight” - and she did!
