Castle View Residents Enjoy A Cultural Day Full of Passion, Pride And Fabulous Food
Castle View is proud of its cultural diversity and an environment where everyone can be themselves. The Cultural Day was an opportunity to celebrate and also to learn about different cultures through food, music and a wealth of shared information.
The Wellbeing Team set the wheels in motion to organise an event which would incorporate nearly 20 different nationalities and everyone collaborated brilliantly to bring it to life. The positive atmosphere at Castle View this shone through on the big day, along with the sun which played its part by making a welcome appearance!
Classic Dishes and Favourite Food From The Philippines To The Isle Of Man
Team members gathered to set up tables representing their various countries, laying out an array of different dishes which were presented alongside descriptions. Each table also displayed interesting facts about their nations – the official flower or animal, favourite football teams, best known tourist destinations – so that as residents, relatives and team mates went round to taste the food they could also get a flavour of its country of origin.
There was swathe of colour across the garden as staff wrapped themselves in national flags or wore items of national dress. The food choices were incredible from countries as wide-ranging as the Philippines, Jamaica, Ireland, Romania, Zimbabwe, Lebanon, South Africa, St Lucia, Scotland, Sierra Leone - and of course, the Isle of Man. It isn’t every day that you can taste the famous Chicken Adobo from the Philippines, a delicious goat curry from Jamaica, the Scottish classic ‘neeps and tatties’, a traditional Irish stew and Manx ‘Bonnag’ bread in one sitting. It was a culinary and cultural voyage of discovery!
Residents’ countries of origin were also represented, one example being Hungary where resident Judith, who was born there, worked with Louise from the Wellbeing team to create a delicious Hungarian meatball dish.
A Voyage of Discovery and Shared Experiences
Team members proudly sang their national anthems and encouraging residents to try different dishes. A tug of war between two teams of staff members (residents spectating only!) and some enthusiastic dancing were also part of a very happy afternoon where there was a real sense of coming together. The Cultural Day was a wonderful way of embracing and celebrating cultural diversity through food, as well as discovering new things and sharing new experiences. Everyone had fun and feedback from residents was unanimous: “It was a great day!”
