Celebrating 64 years of marriage and counting for Bill and Louise after “love at first sight”

21st August 2024

The team at Parris Lawn were excited to celebrate the 64th wedding anniversary of residents Bill and Louise, who moved into the care home in Ringmer village just over a year ago.

First Meeting at a Sunday Service

Louise and Bill are clearly a perfect pair and as Parris Lawn Care Home Manager, Costin, remarked, “Their love for one another shines through. It’s wonderful to see a couple still so happy together after all this time”.

The couple met in 1958 at the Methodist Church in Burgess Hill where Bill was a steward and Louise was attending a Sunday service with her younger sister and their mother. Bill welcomed them to the church and when he handed Louise a hymn book she gave him the biggest smile. That was it, Bill was smitten! In Bill’s words, “I saw a very elegant and well-dressed young lady with a beautiful smile. It was love at first sight!”

Tying the Knot and Full Life to Follow

Louise and Bill crossed paths again at a youth group and got to know one another as time went on, before getting engaged in 1959. They got married in 1960 in the church where they first met and where they are still members of the congregation. Much of their married life was spent in Burgess Hill where Louise worked as a teacher, lecturer, and researcher while Bill was an estimator and surveyor.

In their retirement, Louise and Bill travelled extensively, making some wonderful memories and the team at Parris Lawn felt privileged to mark Louise and Bill’s very special day with them, creating new memories around the happy occasion.

Celebrating with Cake and Recalling Happy Memories

“No celebration at Parris Lawn is complete without a cake!”, declared Costin, and Parris Lawn’s chefs created a fabulous one – a spectacular chocolate and strawberry sponge cake, decorated with a beautiful silver anniversary cake topper.

The Parris Lawn team wanted to make a big fuss of Louise and Bill on their special day so once the couple had finished their celebratory lunch, the wellbeing team sat down with them to reminisce about their wedding day as they looked back through their wedding album.

When asked for the secret of their long and happy relationship, Louise and Bill said they attributed their many years together simply to love, which has always been at the heart of their marriage.
