Christmas reminiscence

10th December 2018

The residents at Galsworthy House care home with nursing in Kingston upon Thames enjoyed a Christmas inspired reminiscence afternoon.

Tim hosted the talk at Galsworthy looking at Christmas, starting with "Hark The Herald Angels" followed by a traditional Christmas Carol "In The Bleak Mid Winter" sung by Gustov Holst.

Tim went on to discuss the worst winter to hit Britain which was actually 1946/47. It caused massive disruptions of energy supply for homes, offices and factories. Animal herds were affected and people suffered from the persistent cold, with many businesses shutting down temporarily. When warm weather returned. Wen it began to warm, the ice thawed which caused further problems with flooding in low-lying areas. The residents remembered this as they were either still young or had families of their own by this time which caused much discussion.

We also discussed the origination of the Queens speech and Christmas pudding, which most of us cannot live without!

After this thought provoking discussion, Tim played Brenda Lee singing "Rocking Around The Christmas Tree' which was in 1958. We also learned that Henry Vlll was the first king to try turkey!? We had ended the session with the wonderful song "White Christmas " sung by Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra.

It was a very interesting afternoon we look forward to our next reminiscence in March 2019.
