Cotman House Welcomes The Community To Their Understanding Dementia Workshop

21st August 2024

Cotman House Care Home in Felixstowe recently hosted a highly informative "Understanding Dementia" workshop, drawing members of the local community together for an engaging and educational experience.

The event, led by Caring Homes regional dementia trainer, Chris Elsley, provided valuable insights into dementia and offered practical advice for caregivers, family members, and those affected by the condition.

Encouraging a Deeper Understanding of Dementia

Held in the welcoming environment of Cotman House, the workshop was designed to encourage a deeper understanding of dementia, demystifying the condition and offering tools to improve the quality of life for those living with it. Chris Elsley, known for her compassionate approach and extensive knowledge, guided attendees through key topics, including the different types of dementia, early signs and symptoms, effective communication strategies, and the importance of creating a supportive environment.

Attendee, Claire Sharrock commented, “Although I see and live with the effects of dementia on a daily basis it was helpful to have things explained in detail by such an expert on the subject. It was also impressive and encouraging to hear about the dementia training that your staff receive.”

Kirsty Allen, Manager of Cotman House Care Home, was delighted that the community had responded so enthusiastically to the event. "We were thrilled to see such a strong turnout for the 'Understanding Dementia' workshop. It's clear that our community is deeply committed to supporting those affected by dementia, and we are proud to have provided a space for this important conversation," she said.

Sharing Experiences and Offering Coping Strategies

Throughout the workshop, participants had the opportunity to ask questions, share personal experiences, and learn from one another in a supportive setting. The session also emphasised the role of caregivers and the emotional and practical challenges they face, offering strategies to help them cope and thrive in their vital roles.

Chris Elsley, who has spent many years working with dementia patients and their families, highlighted the importance of community involvement in dementia care. "Workshops like these are essential for building a community that is informed and compassionate towards those living with dementia. By understanding the condition better, we can create a more supportive and empathetic environment for everyone involved,".

More Confidence and a Renewed Sense of Purpose

Attendees left the workshop with a deeper understanding of dementia and a renewed sense of purpose in their caregiving roles. Many expressed appreciations for the practical advice and emotional support they received during the session, noting that the workshop had helped them feel more confident and prepared in their interactions with loved ones affected by dementia.

Cotman House Care Home plans to continue offering educational events and workshops to support the Felixstowe community. The success of the "Understanding Dementia" workshop is a testament to the care home's commitment to raising awareness and providing essential resources for those impacted by dementia.
