Exotic Creatures Take Centre Stage At Whittington House Care Home
You’d be forgiven for expecting an equine visitor at Cheltenham-based Whittington House Care Home. But the residents experienced something far more thrilling when some very different species recently came to call.
Danni, one of our carers, brough some surprise guests into the Residents Lounge. Smooth, slinky snakes and gentle bearded dragons were the most popular with those residents who came along. At ease and eager to interact with the animals, residents were keen to hold and stroke the creatures, delighted to get close to something so unusual – although not so strange for Danni who owns 72 exotic animals!
Thrilling Encounters and a Therapeutic Experience
The activity not only sparked the residents’ curiosity, but also provided sensory-rich stimulation – a therapeutic experience, which, alongside the entertainment brought by close-up encounters with their unusual visitors, inspired plenty of smiles and conversation between the residents. Danni also enjoys these special visits and said, “I love bringing in the animals and sharing my passion with the residents. It’s great to see the smiles and the happiness this brings them”.
It was an afternoon full of fun and for many, it was unlike anything they’d experienced before. Shirley, one of the residents, remarked, “It’s like being at the zoo! I have never seen so many animals and there are even some I have never ever seen in my life. We had an amazing time”.
