Farm-to-Table Fun: Hawkhill House Residents Savor Fresh Delights at Aberdeen Allotment Market
Residents and team members from Hawkhill House Care Home in Aberdeen recently enjoyed a delightful outing to Victoria Park to attend a local cooking demo and taster, organised by the Aberdeen Allotment Market Stall. The event was part of the market stall's summer initiative to bring fresh produce direct from local allotments to the community.
During the event, the group purchased fresh potatoes, lettuce, and rhubarb from the stall. The rhubarb was creatively transformed into delicious tea by Eilidh, Hawkhill’s Well Being Coordinator that everyone thoroughly enjoyed. Resident Pam, with her passion for baking, was delighted to select the rhubarb, knowing just how to use it in recipes to create delectable treats. Meanwhile, the potatoes and lettuce were skillfully incorporated into the evening meal by the home's chef, providing a farm-to-table experience for the residents.
These visits to the Aberdeen Allotment Market Stall events hold special significance for the residents, as they evoke cherished memories of cooking and shopping with their loved ones. Participating in such community events not only supports local businesses and initiatives but also fosters a sense of belonging and connection within the community.
The highlight of the day was the engaging Cooking Demo and Taster, presented by the Aberdeen Allotment Market Stall team. The residents eagerly watched as the cooking demo unfolded before their eyes.
Christine, a Hawkhill House resident, found joy in exploring the beautiful flower displays in the park and enthusiastically shared stories about the wilderness garden, reminiscing about her visits to the park during her student days while courting her future husband.
Christine expressed her delight, saying, "It was lovely visiting Victoria Park again; I used to go there all the time when I was a student."
Mel Shearer, Home Manager at Hawkhill House Care Home, commented on the event, stating, "This was a wonderful opportunity for our residents to engage with the local community and support local businesses. Our residents enjoyed being outdoors, surrounded by summer displays and fresh air."
These local events provide an invaluable platform for residents to actively participate in community engagement, showcase their skills, and revel in the beauty of flower displays, promoting overall well-being and a strong sense of community. As Hawkhill House Care Home continues to foster such interactions, residents can look forward to more enriching experiences that add value to their lives.
