Goats On The Guest List As Children From Orchard Therapeutic Farm Visit Benson House Residents
Residents at Benson House Care Home in Wallingford look forward to receiving visitors, especially when they’re a mixed bunch.
A recent visit by children from Chalgrove-based Orchard Therapeutic Farm certainly ticked that box when they brought along a group of young goats to meet our residents!
The Orchard is an innovative farm – a small and nurturing learning provision for children between 6 and 18 years old, who may have social, emotional, and mental health difficulties. Within the farm environment, the children are also taught about environmental stewardship, sustainable living practices and are instilled with a sense of responsibility and respect for the natural world.
An Intergenerational Event with Go-between Goats
Our Wellbeing & Activities Co-ordinator, Caroline, had previously organised a visit to Orchard Therapeutic Farm for some of the Benson House residents and it was so well received, Caroline set up a return visit.
Our residents enjoy meeting and chatting with young people, so this was a wonderful opportunity to build a bond between the generations, with the chance to see and pat extremely cute baby goats a bonus!
The team and children from The Orchard Therapeutic Farm mingled with residents and team members from the care home, with the goats acting as go-betweens and socialising nicely. The residents were clearly enamoured, with Jenny commenting, “They were so lovely and really cute.”
Popular Guests who Trim the Lawn
In between all the attention, our guest goats kindly gave the lawn a trim, an extra service which added to the feel-good factor surrounding the day, and the pleasure our residents gained from interacting with both children and animals.
Resident Margaret summed up the positive sentiment: “I hope they’ll pay us another visit and bring some more of their other animal friends with them too.”
