Guysfield enjoy a Right Royal Street Party
17th June 2016
The residents of Guysfield Care Home in Letchworth, enjoyed a Right Royal street party to mark the Queens 90th birthday this week.Planning has been going on for weeks in the home as the residents and care team prepared for what us Brits are used to, bad weather, by building their very own street that they could line the walls of the home with. Activities arts and crafts sessions took place over the weeks to the build houses out of cardboard and decorating to make them look like a street, along with the paper chains that lined the ceilings of the dining room. The pictures of the Queen that our residents drew a few weeks ago adorned the walls for everyone to see and the winning picture was worn by a couple of the care team on a t-shirt.The day went off with a vintage style bang! The care team dressed in 40's and 50' clothing and they were joined by a Pearly Minstrel for entertainment on the day.The Pearly Kings and Queens evolved from Coster King and Queens who admired style and panache and with the typical Coster cheek they imitated the wealthy West End society, who by the early 19th century had developed a fashion for wearing pearls and parading in their finery on Sundays in the fashionable London parks – the Costers took it one step further by sewing lines of pearl flashers on their battered hand-me down waist coats, caps and working trousers and started doing their own parade. Where once Pearly Kings and Queens collected for those that fell on hard times, Pearly Minstrels continue to spread good cheer and the Cockney spirit.Which is exactly what our Pearly Minstrel did, dazzling us with Good Ol' Cockney classics, getting everyone up dancing and singing along on the day.The walls were lined with streets, and red, white and blue balloons and bunting, whilst the tables were decorated with vintage china and 'war time' foods such as sausage rolls, beef paste sandwiches, Victoria sponge cakes and ginger ale. To top off the lunch we were treated to a birthday cake baked bu our own chefs with a street party theme to wish the Queen happy birthday.Thank you to everyone that joined us for the day and everyone's hard work. We had a wonderful day and look forward to another day soon![gallery columns="4" ids="13331,13318,13330,13329,13328,13327,13326,13325,13324,13323,13322,13321,13319,13320"]
