Hawkhill’s Lovell announced as a finalist at the Scottish Care Home Awards

7th November 2022

We are pleased to announce Lovell Castrence, Site Maintenance Officer at Hawkhill House has been selected as a finalist at the 2022 Scottish Care Home Awards.

Nominated by Home manager Mel Shearer for the Ancillary and Support Staff award, the award will recognise an excellent member of ancillary or support staff, who makes a significant contribution to the overall care provision, and demonstrates excellence and pride in the service they provide to residents.

A great asset to Hawkhill, Lovell is hard working and committed to his role and his contributions to the overall care provision goes beyond his technical expertise. He has an inherent focus on respecting the residents in the home, recognising that his work makes a difference to their lives. His work is always completed to a high standard and he consistently receives compliments for his speed of work while maintaining attention to detail.

On talking about Lovell, Home Manager Mel said, “Lovell is so easy to work with and everyone likes to work with him; approachable, friendly, generous with his time and resources he always puts other people first. He is innovative with his approach to sort out issues in the home resulting to genius ideas.”

Lovell often makes special dishes from his own country to share with the team and use this as an opportunity to create conversations about cultural diversity, and help others appreciate the different cultures within the home.

In November 2021, Aberdeen was hit by a massive storm causing electrical disruption to the whole region. The roads were blocked with fallen trees as well as flooding. Lovell was one of the few staff members who were able to brave the storm, staying overnight in the Home to be an extra pair of hands for the care staff. With very little sleep he proceeded to drive back and forth to the Home to bring staff in to work, bring in supplies such as torches, batteries, and additional food supplies.

Lovell enjoys including residents in some of his projects, allowing them to help as much as they can. When he was building a bedside table, he noticed one of the residents looking very interested. The resident lives with dementia and has some challenges expressing himself. He invited the resident to help him and enabled him to carry out as much of the work by himself, providing assistance only when needed. Afterwards, his wife complimented the Home saying that her husband looked like a very different man from when first came to the home; now more engaged and communicating more with her.

Taking place at the Hilton Hotel in Glasgow, the Scottish Care Home Awards will be held on Friday, 18th November.

Wishing Lovell the best of luck!
