Hertfordshire Firefighters Enjoy A Day Of Connection With Residents At The Orchard
A sunny day at The Orchard Nursing Home in St Albans brought some special visitors for the residents and when a bright red fire engine pulled up in the car park, everybody sat up and took notice.
An Introduction to the Fire Engine and all its Gadgets
Residents gathered outside and welcomed firefighters from the Hertfordshire brigade who emerged from the vehicle. After introducing themselves, they explained the purpose of their visit: to offer a hands-on presentation of their fire engine and equipment, and to share some important fire safety tips. The residents listened attentively, many of them recalling memories from their past when they had seen firefighters in action.
The firefighters then began by explaining the various tools and gadgets stored in the vehicle, from hoses and ladders to the breathing apparatus and rescue gear. The residents were fascinated by the complexity of the equipment and for most, it was the first time they had seen it in so much detail.
Handling the Hose – Everyone’s Favourite Part of the Day
The highlight of the day, however, was when the residents got the chance to handle the fire hose. Residents took turns at aiming the hose, guided by the firefighters, and everyone who took part was delighted by the feel of the powerful rush of water. Some even playfully directed the hose at the cars and the firefighters couldn’t help smiling at the residents’ energy and enthusiasm.
It was a real highlight for resident, Hazel who decided that at 100 years old, she was ready to become a firefighter. She wore red, wielded the hose like a professional and said, “I absolutely loved it!”
Making a Positive Impact
As the day drew to a close, the firefighters gathered everyone for a final group photo. The visit was more than just an educational experience; it was a day of connection with the community. The residents of The Orchard Nursing Home appreciated the time and effort the Hertfordshire firefighters had taken to visit them, and the firefighters left knowing they had made a positive impact.
The event reminded everyone of the importance of community, safety, and the enjoyment that can be found in learning something new—no matter your age.
