Horsell Lodge passes first inspection with flying colours

Horsell Lodge Care Home has been praised in its first Care Quality Commission (CQC) report for having a kind and caring staff team who treat the residents with respect.

The care home was rated as Good in each of the five inspection categories - safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led – during the visit.

In line with the CQC’s new ways of working following the Covid pandemic the infection control and prevention measures in place were inspected in full. This is to ensure the home is prepared in preventing or managing any infection outbreak.

Part of the Caring Homes family Horsell Lodge is a residential care home that can provide personal care and accommodation up to 70 people aged 65 and over. Located on the outskirts of the delightful village of Horsell, this stunning new home is built to the latest care standards offering dementia, residential and nursing care on a permanent and short stay basis.

During the CQC inspection residents said that staff were kind and caring. One said, "They (staff) are kind to people here". Another person said, "The staff are so good. They have time to talk and ask how I am when they see me. If I need anything at all I know they will do what they can for me. They (staff) are always very kind when talking to me."

During the inspection staff were observed showing respect for people's privacy. Staff closed doors to bedrooms when supporting people in their rooms and knocked and waited for answers before entering people's private rooms. All staff were seen to promote independence.

The home was seen to be supporting residents to express their views and be involved in making decisions about their care. One resident said, "We get to talk about everything we need." Another person said, "They come and talk to me about what care I have and need. We speak about any changes and what I think could be done. They do try and make sure I get what I need."

Dacre Lassauniere Home Manager, said: “At Caring Homes we want to ensure that our home is just that – a caring home. We are all extremely happy that the CQC inspectors have recognised what a great team we have here and that we have been rated as Good in every category in our first inspection.”

To come to their decision the inspection team spoke with eight people living at Horsell Lodge and two relatives about their experience of the care provided. They also interviewed seven members of staff including the area manager, registered manager, deputy manager, senior care workers and care workers as well as reviewing a range of records included two people's care records and multiple medication records, a variety of records relating to the management of the service, including policies and procedures were reviewed.
