Horsell Lodge Welcomes Over 40 Furry Paws On “National Hug A Hound Day”
Canine visitors are always welcome at Horsell Lodge so when the Wellbeing Team noticed National Hug a Hound Day on the calendar, they seized the opportunity to throw a pooch-focused party.
Residents Make Tasty Treats for Special Guests
Residents joined the team to create homemade dog treats for their furry guests and with more than a dozen dogs coming to call, there were plenty of appreciative “woofs” throughout the day.
The ‘whole home activity’, which supports complete inclusivity, meant that residents who weren’t well enough to leave their rooms also had the option of individual dog visitors.
An Event That Includes All Residents
The event was organised and hosted by Wellbeing lead Rachel Saunders, who explained, “While most care homes do have dog visitors, we wanted to be a little different and turn the visits into an event. Most importantly, through careful management, we ensured that as part of our ‘whole home dignity first process’, even those residents unable to leave their rooms would be included if they wanted to be.”
A large part of Rachel’s role is community engagement and the team is always looking for new ways to either be part of what’s happening out in the community or to bring the community into the home. Rachel added, “Dogs bring so much pleasure to our residents that this was a way to give back to our canine friends and show our appreciation. It was lovely to see residents getting involved in making the treats and then offering them to the dogs”.
Canines on the Cards at Christmas
The day was such a success that several of Horsell Lodge residents have requested this as a regular event, with a Christmas dog event already being planned. Pigs in Blankets could be a popular with a wider audience in December!
