Knitting Tiny Tops Marks A Creative Stay For A Hillside Resident

26th April 2024

When knitting fan, Josie, found herself in need of a 4-week respite stay at Hillside Care Home in Suffolk, she used the time well, knitting up a storm for the benefit of some tiny recipients.

Knitting with Purpose

Josie has always loved knitting and over the years she’s made a variety of cosy items for numerous friends and family members. When she joined the residents at Hillside, Josie was chatting about her hobby with senior carer, Kelly, who mentioned that the special neonatal unit at West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds is always grateful for warm garments for the tiniest patients in their care. Josie loved the idea of knitting with purpose and the needles were soon flying!

Incredibly, super-speedy Josie was able to knit two or three cardigan and hat sets in a day and in no time at all, she’d created 26 little cardigans and bonnets in a rainbow of colours.

Josie’s fabulous pieces were sent to the hospital and staff there were delighted to receive them. They told Josie that the babies on the ward would really benefit from her hard work and dedication, and they were particularly impressed by the meticulous detail and the use of so many beautiful colours.

Enjoyable and Beneficial – Knitting is Good for You!

Kelly said “Josie’s a lovely lady who has a real talent for knitting and she seemed really motivated by the idea of creating garments for the tiny babies in the hospital. She was very pleased with the final results and was happy to be able to donate them to those in need.”

Knitting and crochet are popular activities in many of our homes and alongside the creative aspect, both can have additional benefits such as improved dexterity and coordination, the reduction of stress and, as our ‘Knit and Natter’ groups, have shown, new friendships and social interaction.

Whilst not every knitter will reach Josie’s speed or high standard, it can be a hugely enjoyable pastime with results that can make a difference to someone’s day, even those too young to remember!
