Kurling Competition at Mellish House
10th July 2018
Recently at Mellish House care home in Sudbury, we invited Sam from Elatus Sports to run a Kurling Competition for our residents and guests.Eleven of our residents gathered together for the competition and some were joined by their relatives and loved ones. The aim of the game was to get the Kurling stones on the targets using the poles. The stones run on ball bearings so slide easily towards the colourful targets. So with this in mind and with lots of anticipation, we grouped everyone in a large circle with the floor targets positioned in the middle. Every resident assisted by Sam soon got the idea and so the competition began in earnest.Everyone got into the spirit and played the games with lots of enthusiasm. Apart from some obvious cheating (we won’t name names!) which was taken in good spirits and met by hearty laughter, everyone soon took it seriously, pushing the Kurling stones using the poles with gusto. The overall winner was one of our residents who is a young 93 and she accepted her trophy, a gold cup and medal, with grace and a very big smile. We awarded medals to all who took part in the games, so everyone was a winner and they stood around comparing them and their game play. This game is great for many of our residents because the sport doesn't require any physical fitness to play, but in a fun way exercises muscles you would not usually use. This was such a great team activity that we will be definitely doing again, as not only is it a great way of gentle exercise, good for interaction and morale, it left everyone with a big smile and a rosy glow.Mellish House Care Home is a purpose-built home providing residential care for up to 48 elderly residents living with a form of dementia. We are very proud to announce Mellish House has been rated Outstanding by the CQC in the most recent report published on 30th December 2017.
