Meet Whittington House Woodlands Suite Resident, John

30th May 2024

As May’s springtime hues complement Whittington House’s Woodlands Suite perfectly, we meet resident John, who finds that being close to nature suits him down to the ground – especially when it’s time for a visit from his canine companion, Cali.

John was born and bred in Cheltenham and for 41 years, worked for the town’s best known organisation (although most famous for its well kept secrets) – GCHQ. His job took him to meetings with military groups all over the country, but John remains discretion personified. He and his wife lived all over the world and when asked which was his favourite destination, Barbados topped the list. Not surprisingly, John still likes to keep up with current affairs from across the globe. Somehow during his busy working life, John also found the time to train for and run six marathons, completing the London marathon four times, so he’s always keen to watch the race on TV.

Last year, aged 75, John found that getting about was becoming more difficult and he felt he needed some extra support. To start with, John tried out a couple of different homes for rehabilitation and respite, and when he finally decided to make the move permanent, Whittington House was his first choice. John’s arrival coincided with the opening of the Woodlands Suite, and he chose to move into one of its stylish and impeccably designed rooms, which offer residents the best of all worlds at Whittington House.

Bringing the Outside In – Floor to Ceiling Windows and Private Patios

The Woodlands Suite’s ground floor location brings the outside in beautifully, with floor to ceiling windows in every room allowing natural light all through the day and direct access onto individual private patios. It’s a versatile setting that’s simple to personalise so it’s easy to create your own home feel, and the en suite completes a private space that’s comfortable, expertly finished and completely yours.

Sociable Space and a Friendly Community

If the rooms present a tranquil scene where you can welcome guests or simply unwind in peace, the Woodland Suite also has a sociable side. Its cosy ground floor lounge is where residents, family and friends to get together for conversations, catch ups and activities – and it’s becoming a popular location for visiting groups and regular meetings, all of which create a sense of community and camaraderie. The lounge also works well when residents need a change of scenery and John often brings his book and sits by the window, enjoying a different aspect and an alternative view of the gardens as he reads. John has a canine companion – Cali – a well behaved hound who visits him at Whittington House and also enjoys a spot of time in the lounge. Both John and Cali get a lot of enjoyment from the grounds at Whittington and John remarked, “I can’t wait for summer so that I am able to have breakfast outside and spend some time on my private patio area”.

The Best of All Worlds – Relaxed, Companiable and a Luxurious Sense of Calm

The ambiance throughout Whittington House is relaxed and companionable, with daily opportunities for residents to interact, make friends and get involved as and when they choose to. John is happy and settled here and as well as being located near where his wife lives, John commented, “I have been to quite a few care homes in Cheltenham, and I have found that this is easily the best. It is nice and quiet, and staff are better than anywhere else”.

The Woodlands Suite offers an extra dimension to life as a resident at Whittington House – its own lovely atmosphere, the benefit of private outside space and a luxurious sense of calm. With plenty of group events to dip into when you want to be sociable, your room gives you the freedom to enjoy whatever makes you happy in an environment that’s unique – so whether it’s a glass of wine with a friend in the early evening sunshine, a lazy morning with coffee and the paper, or a moment to yourself listening to birdsong, you’ll find yourself well and truly at home.
