Mellish build links with the local school

18th November 2016
Mellish House in Sudbury was visited for the first time by a year 6 class from the local Pot Kiln Primary School this week. The pupils arrived at Mellish House and participated in a Christmas themed arts and crafts session with the residents. This vital community link was formed following a meeting with Pot Kiln Primary School year 6 Teacher Mr David Stevens, he explained 'I am excited to make links with Mellish House as it is important the children have an understanding of the care required in their own local community.' Mellish House Home Manager Khala also suggested 'This will help eradicate the stigma that can sometimes surround peoples general understanding of dementia.' This is a subject close to Mr Stevens heart so we are looking forward to developing the relationship further. The Children were welcomed by Glenda, Activities Coordinator, assisting staff and various residents who were eager to meet them. The arts and crafts session was a resounding success and was thoroughly enjoyed by all involved, the interactions throughout were very positive leaving some pupils commenting they did not want to leave and asking when they could return for another visit. Teacher Mr David Stevens informed afterwards “The children absolutely loved it. It was fantastic to see them interacting with the residents. Thanks for making us feel so welcome!”Since the visit from the pupils residents have been commenting on their enjoyment from the visit and also asking when the children will return. Resident, Brenda said “It was really wonderful to see them all”.The pupils of year 6 will be returning to the home monthly to meet with our residents.
