Mellish Residents Inspired To Create A Triple Entry For The Christmas Wreath Competition
When the Caring Homes Christmas Wreath competition was launched last month, a group of green fingered residents at Mellish House in Sudbury, Suffolk, found inspiration their own back garden.
Foliage Gathered for the Wreath Makers Table
Residents Jim, Frances, Grace and George enjoy being out in the garden and are always checking to see if any gardening needs doing. The brief for the Christmas Wreath competition was open to interpretation so these residents decided that creating a natural wreath using foliage growing in their own grounds would be a lovely way to represent Mellish House.
Activities team members Chris and Claire helped the residents to forage in the garden for suitable branches and leaves and they returned with armfuls of holly, cypress, laurel, grasses and berries. The issue of having too much material for one wreath was quickly resolved when the resident wreath-makers decided to make three!
Creativity Unleashed as Three Teams Get to Work
Everyone gathered to get started and soon, branches were strewn across various tables in the activities room with the best ones selected for the next stage. Spirits were high and Grace laughed, "Well this is just lovely, sitting down all together and doing something Christmasy, just like when I was younger and ordering my kids how it should be done”!
George’s wife, Jill, was excited to join him – she’d been looking forward to it for weeks. They collaborated on a wreath, although George was definitely in the driving seat as far as the design was concerned and did a wonderful job communicating exactly what he wanted to Jill.
Meanwhile, the Activities team were getting stuck in too, as Chris worked with Frances and Claire joined Jim and Grace to help add some subtle finishing touches - baubles, ribbons and snowflakes – to their wreaths.
Pride of Place for a Triple Festive Decoration
Once all three wreaths had been completed, many pictures were taken. George said to his wife, Jill, "Can I have a look, does it look better than me?" to which Jill answered, "Of course not”! George replied, “Well let’s get it looking better so people know I did it!" with a huge smile on his face – a very happy moment for both George and Jill.
The completed wreaths were hung in pride of place around the entrance to Mellish House – a fabulous, triple festive decoration!
Activities Coordinator Chris reflected on how enjoyable the wreath making had been: “It's really important to me to make sure the festive season is all about coming together – whether that’s welcoming families to take part in activities or arranging things for our residents to do as a group, or in the company of our team. It’s also a time to share stories and memories. This was such lovely project and we’re all incredibly proud to show off our three beautiful wreaths.”
