More Than One Birthday To Celebrate At Hillside During Care Home Open Week

2nd July 2024

As they looked forward to marking 30 years of Caring Homes during Care Home Open Week, the team at Hillside Care Home were also planning to celebrate another birthday in the same week.

Victoria Sponge and a Round of Blackjack

On Tuesday, resident Margaret was 88 years old - an occasion that was celebrated with a special coffee morning. Of course, no coffee morning would be complete without a homemade cake and Hillside’s lovely assistant chef, Jude, rose to the challenge with a spectacular Victoria sponge and some smaller, individual cakes. Residents remarked how delicious they were and how the smell of home baked cakes brought back so many fond memories for them.

Then, in the afternoon, the residents had a fun session with the Home Manager playing blackjack at Khala's Casino. Named after the Home Manager – Khala – the casino takes place every second Tuesday of the month and residents look forward to a round of blackjack or a spin of the roulette wheel. Resident Maurice said, “I had a great time and I’m looking forward to the next one!”

30th Birthday Barbecue

The following day saw the hugely anticipated 30th birthday celebration for Caring Homes. Head Chef, Aga, fired up the barbecue and served freshly grilled burgers, hotdogs and chicken breasts with chips and salads, followed by a classic summer dessert – strawberry gateaux. Residents enjoyed the food and celebrated the occasion on a beautifully sunny day, shaded from the heat but happy to be outside. Afterwards, the talented choir from Pot Kiln School came by and residents had a wonderful time listening to the children singing. They had previously visited at Christmas and were a big hit with residents so this seemed like the perfect time to invite them back.

One resident said, “It was a fantastic day and I really enjoyed being outside in the fresh air. All the staff work so hard to make days like these a real enjoyment – they are so kind and dedicated”.

The week of celebration was rounded off Friday with a visit by opera singer, Alice, who delighted residents with her beautiful voice.

The team at Hillside loves to arrange events and activities that will bring pleasure to the residents and enhance their wellbeing, especially when the weather allows some time to be spent outside. It’s safe to say that everyone at Hillside had a wonderful time during Care Home Open Week and with a special 30th birthday cake to share round too, there was no shortage of treats as the anniversary was celebrated with enthusiasm!
