Residents at Mellish House Enjoy Visit to Alpaca Acres
On Tuesday 1st August, four lucky residents from Mellish House Care Home had the chance to visit Alpaca Acres farm in Great Tey, Colchester.
Organised by the wellbeing team at Mellish House Care Home, residents Maureen, George, Heather and Francis indulged in a therapeutic afternoon which included meeting a variety of animals whilst having a view of the beautiful countryside. The delightful outing was first thought of by resident George Speller who made his love of animals known to the Mellish team who believed it to be important for the trip to be set up.
Animal Encounters and Fresh Air
During their visit to Alpaca Acres, the residents revelled in the serene countryside setting, surrounded by a variety of friendly animals including alpacas, rabbits, goats, chickens, and pigs. The knowledgeable and friendly team at Alpaca Acres were more than happy to answer residents' inquisitive questions about the animals, their habitats, and even where they preferred to be petted.
The therapeutic benefits of animal encounters are well-documented. Such experiences can trigger the release of endorphins, fostering a sense of wellbeing, and promoting the production of serotonin, a chemical associated with happiness. The residents relished the calming effects of the outing as they interacted with the animals.
Picnic Amidst Nature
After meeting their new animal friends George, Maureen, Francis, and Heather settled down for a picnic in the fresh air. George expressed his gratitude to the wellbeing team at Alpaca Acres, remarking, "Thank you; what a great day that was. I would love to come back." Heather added, "Such a lovely day with fresh air, lovely animals, and the staff were very nice." Maureen and Francis enthusiastically echoed their sentiments, highlighting the success of the outing.
Home Manager, Maekhala Allan, shared her thoughts: "As Home Manager, it's incredibly rewarding to see residents not only enjoying themselves but actively contributing to the enriching experiences we can assist with on behalf of Caring Homes. Our resident-centred approach means that every idea, like George's heartwarming suggestion, has the potential to create beautiful moments that enhance their wellbeing."
