Science Day at Hawkhill House
The residents at Hawkhill House this week enjoyed celebrating National Science Day, the theme of the year 2018 was “Science and Technology for a Sustainable Future.”
The national day is to spread a message about the Importance of science used in the daily life of the people. To display all the activities, efforts and achievements in the field of science for human welfare around the world. The celebration includes public speeches, radio-TV talk shows, science movies, science exhibitions based on themes and concepts, watching the night sky, live projects, research demonstration, debates, quiz competitions, lectures, science model exhibitions and many more activities.
Hawkhill House decided to get their creative juices flowing as they designed and built a mini volcano with bits from around the home, with a mini pool below and hill like structures.
The residents predicted what would happen when they poured the vinegar into the volcano. As the vinegar was poured in we all watched it erupt! We discussed the reaction. The “lava” bubbles that erupt are filled with carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide is a gas that forms when an acid (the vinegar) reacts with a base (the baking soda).
We are looking forward to our next experiment!
Hawkhill House provides specialist nursing and dementia care in a purpose built environment for up to 43 elderly people.
