Shopping, Flipping And Topping – The Perfect Ingredients For A Great Pancake Day
When a bus ride into town came with a mission attached, residents at Horsell Lodge were quick to book their seats!
The opportunity to enjoy a weekly foray into the local community on a minibus has been popular at Horsell Lodge Care Home, with one resident recently exclaiming: “’It made me feel like life is worth living still. I like people watching and even the bus ride to get there was a great experience”.
However, a recent outing came with an added purpose – the residents had decided they wanted to do their own pancake day topping shopping in Woking, just a short drive from Horsell Lodge.
Residents took their seats on the bus, already planning what they’d be looking out for in the supermarket. Serial shopper Eileen is a regular on the weekly excursions, often first to put her name on the list, and this particular outing brought back memories: “It reminds me of when I worked for Marks and Spencer’s many years ago, I only went in as a Christmas temp and stayed on 10 years. We bought fresh lemons for the pancakes and also blueberries and raspberries. Some of the fruit we bought I had never even heard of before, like kiwi fruit.”
Judging by the contents of her shopping trolley, Eileen’s an expert stacker! She was especially keen to get the pancake topping selections right as she’d invited her family to the afternoon’s pancake feast. Once everyone’s favourites had been ticked off the list the group travelled back to Horsell Lodge and handed over their stash to the kitchen.
When pancake hour arrived, team members and residents split their time between making their own pancakes, seeing who could do the highest flip and finally, enjoying the decadence of eating them! Eileen was happy with the end result, especially as her daughter and son in law got into the spirit of the day. She explained: “They had pancakes too and helped serve, they really enjoy coming here mixing with all the nice people and eating nice treats.’’
After some professional flipping and extremely creative presentation using the ingredients brought back from that morning’s shopping trip, the event was pronounced a huge success. Home Manager, Julie Bignell, said ‘It’s lovely to take the time to have fun and be silly with our residents, especially when you get a pancake at the end!’.
