Strike Up The Band! - Ukeleles Take Centre Stage At Brooklyn House
There were smiles all round when Brooklyn House Nursing Home hosted Wymondham Ukelele Band for an afternoon of extremely cheerful music!
The Ideal Entertainment for Everyone
Wellbeing Coordinators, Catrina and Agnes, knew they were on to a winner when they contacted the band, who are based in the nearby town of Wymondham. “We really love our music here at Brooklyn House – it’s a good excuse for a get together, especially because it’s one of the only activities that covers all PAL levels.”
They explained that PAL (Pool Activity Level) is a checklist that determines the ability level of people living with all stages of dementia. Once the checklist is completed, a unique profile is created for every resident. The care and wellbeing teams use these profiles to tailor activities that will enhance each resident’s wellbeing, as well as identifying a range of activities that everyone can participate in. Listing to music and watching it being performed is a perfect example.
The George Formby Classic gets the Popular Vote!
The Wymondham Ukelele Band have a great deal of fun providing entertainment at various events and venues in the area, and raising money for a different charity each year, with Macmillan Cancer Support nominated for 2024. On this occasion, the entertainment was for our residents’ benefit and the band arrived looking very professional in smart red waistcoats.
Once all residents were present and correct, the band set off on a canter through a selection of popular classics, including: ‘Sunny Afternoon’ by The Kinks, a Buddy Holly medley, some Elvis hits and of course, the much-loved George Formby’s ‘Window Cleaning’ song. Afterwards, everyone enjoyed tea and cake and chatted about their favourite songs.
Catrina and Agnes thought the day was a big success: “Music gives the residents a chance to socialise, have a laugh and get some exercise through singing or a bit of a dance. The band looked the part, and the music was brilliant!”
