VE Day Celebrations at Whittington House
The Activities Team at Whittington House Nursing Home took residents down memory lane for VE day.
Over the week, several reminiscence activities took place around Victory in Europe. Residents watched short films about food rationing and discussed what a typical 1945 menu would have been like, as well as watching short videos that were filmed on May 8th, 1945 – where everyone agreed that the people looked so happy as crowds flooded the streets to celebrate the end of the war.
Activity-based care is a key ingredient for our residents to feel engaged and helps socialisation within the home. These type of reminiscence activities also help those residents with dementia, as it takes them back to times gone by where their memories often flood back.
The short videos from the London Film Museum archives, depicting the celebrations on May 8th 1945 in the streets of London and in more remote areas, transported some of our residents back and they remembered the joy the end of the war brought.
We also enjoyed an online live concert by the VE Dollies – many of the songs sang for us were recalled by the residents. This was another great activity and a fun filled few days was had by all.
