Wear White for Wellbeing at The Orchard
At The Orchard Nursing Home in St Albans the care team and residents celebrated Caring Homes 'Wear White for Wellbeing' this year's theme is hydration.
The elderly are vulnerable to dehydration due to physiological changes in the ageing process such as a reduced sensation of thirst, which may be more pronounced in those with Alzheimer’s disease, cognitive impairments, some health issues, swallowing ability (dysphagia) and some medications.
Some of these indicate that thirst in older people may not be relied on as an indicator of dehydration. As well as monitoring liquid intake and providing aids to make drinking easier for some residents, our care team come up with other ways to increase the want to drink and providing foods that enable hydration.
When someone living with dementia doesn’t seem to drink much you can supplement their fluid intake by giving them foods that contain water for example a tomato is 95% water, cucumber is 96% water, apples and oranges are 86% water and even mushrooms are 92% water.
To make it more appealing the hydration trolley was decorated in a Hawaiian theme, and our chefs put together a platter of crudités and a fruit punch which everyone enjoyed!!
Happy wear white for wellbeing day!
